Briana Waters was sentenced to 48 months (four years) in prison last Friday. She had already served three years when her sentence was overturned. Rather than face another trial and the testimony of activists turned cooperating witnesses Jennifer Kolar and Lacey Phillabaum, Waters decided to follow their lead and agreed to plea guilty and testify against her former partner Justin Solondz. All were arrested in connection with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) arson of the University of Washington horticulture building in 2001. The target was selected because the activists erroneously thought a researcher there was studying genetically modified trees. Water’s betrayal may have spared her from two years in prison but it cost someone else who once trusted her seven years of his life.
